Ed Koch, Rudy, Mike DeBlasio and their Public Advocates and Comptrollers; Andrew and George and Mario and Elliott and their Attorney-Generals (yes even when two of them had been Attorney-General) ALL LOOKED AWAY from what nobody wanted to see: the crumbling roofs and walls, the endless dangerous leaks, the dirt, the mold, the poisons flowing through endless broken pipes and walls, metal front doors warping from it all…and even the crime which has never stopped.
And they looked away because New York, the greatest city on Earth, the Empire State, looked away. Supposedly liberal and humane, nobody looking at the 1,750 anonymous buildings in housing projects throughout the city saw what was happening inside them until an occasional TV expose showed us. And then, out of sight, out of mind.
And 500,000 New Yorkers lived in the biggest slum in America and no one cared.
Today we are told the Federal Government has demanded that the city spend $2 Billion dollars in the next ten years on health and safety “fixes” and the Courts have so ordered. We will see what that really means in terms of actually fixing broken roofs all over New York. Plus getting rid of sickening mold and poisonous lead paint. Ten years!! You can almost bet that it will take forever unless the people of New York care enough to make certain it happens and as soon as possible.
But the real story, the real heart of the matter is still a mystery.
In all these years of deceit and cover-up – where did all the billions of dollars being spent by HUD go? Who has stolen it?
Staff Members of NYCHA? Contractors paid to do work they never did? Local politicians on all levels who took contributions to remain deaf, dumb and blind?
Because beneath the con of deceit and lying must be pure criminality.
When will that be exposed?

NYCHA managers have for years used carefully crafted lies and elaborate deception to cover up the squalid condition of public housing, filing false documents, tricking federal inspectors and betraying the 400,000 tenants who have long endured heartbreaking conditions and the growing sense that nothing will ever change.
A blistering complaint made public Monday by Manhattan U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman ripped the lid off of the city Housing Authority’s longstanding culture of deceit, revealing a long bureaucratic tradition of lying about NYCHA’s failures to address everything from toxic lead paint to mold infestation to rat burrows.
