for the City Council
The Liberal Party of New York has endorsed ten citizen-candidates for the City Council in the upcoming November election…the largest number of City Council candidates ever endorsed by the party.
All the candidates are actively campaigning in the Democratic Primary to become the Democratic candidate in their district. Should they not be successful in the September primary, the Liberal Party has given them the opportunity to continue to campaign for that office in the November General election.
One of the three basic reasons for establishing the Liberal Party 64 years ago, was to help free the Democratic Party from generations of corruption leading in those years to the reign of Tammany Hall and its boss Carmine DeSapio.
By openly supporting liberal Democratic candidates or running candidates of our own against Tammany choices, the Liberal Party helped the Democratic Party break the control of corrupt ‘pay to play’ forces that controlled the city with an iron hand.
Given the Democratic Party’s recent history of arrests, convictions, jail terms and potential indictments, we believe it is time for us to replay that role by again establishing a good government approach to running New York City. We see each of our candidates as being smart, caring, honest citizen-candidates to a City Council which must become far more forceful and independent in governing the city than it has been for many years.
We see too many candidates running for office as protecting an elected position a source of income or wanting to please a County leader or Mayor so that perks come their way that help towards reelection. Independence, honesty and genuine involvement in all areas of the community should be the hallmarks of service and we believe our candidates will be that kind of City Council representative.
With no real choice for Mayor worth supporting, we see the City Council as the only avenue for good government in the immediate years ahead.
New York is a one party town and nothing works anymore. The subways don’t run, 75% of our high school graduates are not ready for college or work, people sleep in the streets, shopping areas all over the city have empty stores not thriving businesses, real estate’s ‘affordable housing’ isn’t affordable for the people who need it, too much healthcare is still delivered in emergency rooms, we talk about closing a badly-run city-wide penal institution and opening jails in every borough to the disbelief of New Yorkers everywhere.
New York is governed by people who talk a good game but can’t deliver.
Change in so many areas of New York will never come from the Office of this Mayor. The City Council must be the elected body which speaks for the people, not the special interests who have in control for years now. An independent, forceful and honest City Council is the only chance the people have to be heard.
Each of our candidates has the will, the energy, ideas and commitment to fight for their communities against forces which too often ignore people in order to serve special interests. Our candidates know this and are determined to break the cycle of corruption and incompetence that is causing so many difficulties for so many New Yorkers.
The election of just this handful of candidates will be Step One to a better New York.
There is no endorsement for District 10. Shall I assume that the party is satisfied with Ydanis Rodriguez’s representation?
